Woven into the story of First Congregational Church is a constant thread of passionate and committed Christ-followers who have sacrificed their time and resources to follow God’s leading. This passion and commitment continues today as we minister to the Lake Mills community and help lead people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.
• It all began…August 15, 1847, a group of nine people met to organize a Congregational church in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. Their names were Kelly & Mary Atwood, Gerald & Mary Cutler, Edwin D. & Sarah Seward, Martin N. & Mary E. Seward, and Mrs. Chary Smith. Rev. Edwin D. Seward became the first pastor of the First Congregational Church of Lake Mills and served for 14 years.
• Continued growth…Our present church building was dedicated in 1902. In 1959, a Christian Education wing was added to the church to expand upon the education of youth and adults. In 1961 the First Congregational Church of Lake Mills chose to partner and be in covenant with the United Church of Christ. In 1968 and 1969, renovations were made in the sanctuary. In 1990 the congregation installed an elevator to ensure that all people, regardless of physical ability, had access to worship God.
• A church on the move…In 2008, First Congregational Church took a radical step forward and sought God’s Vision for the congregation. After nine months of prayer, study, and fasting - God’s Vision was revealed and embraced by the congregation. First Congregational Church is “To lead people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.”
• The story continues…Through the process of Know, Grow, & Serve - First Congregational Church moves forward to expand God’s kingdom and serve Jesus Christ’s love with those who don’t know who He is.
